Don't set yourself up to fail this year!

It is that time of the year again where we all set ourselves goals

target

for the new year and for the majority of us these are either diet or fitness related.

Christmas is over, we have all eaten to much, drunk to much and feel we need to do something about it. However, the majority of us just set ourselves up to fail and don't understand why we never achieve our goals.

Reasons why you don't achieve your goals:

  • The 'all or nothing' approach - This is when we decide to jump straight into something often requiring ourselves to just suddenly stop loads of our old bad habits and just magically begin new good ones. An example of this is going from not attending the gym at all to suddenly going five days a week. A better approach to this would be to start with two sessions a week for month. Once this feels achievable increase it to three and so on. You may even find that your are getting enough out of your three gym sessions a week to achieve your overall goal that you don't need the five.

  • Not realistic - Your expectations needs to be realistic and match your commitment. For instance if your current back squat is 40kg and you expect it to be able to squat 100kg by the end of the year but you can only train once a week it just isn't going to happen.

  • Not measurable - If your goal isn't measurable you will never know if you have achieved it or not. For example if you say you want to lose weight, how can you measure this? However if you say I currently fit into a size 16 and I want to be able to fit into a size 14 this is now measurable.

Don't make these mistakes and make 2022 your year! First of all choose your long term goal and then break this down into lots of smaller goals. This allows you to track your progress along the way and make any adjustments that maybe required. Planning out your goal also allows you to understand the commitment required.
